Located in Northwest Collin County on State Hwy 289 and FM 455, Celina, Tx is about 15 miles NW of McKinney, Tx and 12 miles North of Frisco. Celina was established in 1879 and named after John T. Mulkey's native town, Celina, Tennessee. In 1881 the post office opened in 1881 and had a population of 150 people by 1884 and was home to a Methodist church, a school, a gristmill, cotton gin and several general stores. In 1907 the town of Celina was incorporated and had it's first road built for automobiles in 1915. As with so many other rural towns, Celina's population took a dive from 1,126 in 1920 to 994 in 1940 during the Great Depression. However, after World War II, Celina saw steady growth and by 1950 there were 1,051 residents and by 1980 the population increased to 1,520 and 1,737 by 1990. In 2000 the community had 135 businesses and 1,861 inhabitants.
Recently, the City of Celina was named the 8th fastest growing city in the Dallas Metroplex by the US Census and North Texas Council of Governments Research and Information Services. Residential growth between 2005 and 2006 was at 16.9% and the city's population reached 5,114 in early 2007 and 5,800 in 2008. Today Celina's population has skyrocketed to well over 69,000 people and continues to grow.
